UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to the Tiffin University Dragons on Sunday morning at the SVSU Tennis Complex.
The Cardinals fell behind by a 2-1 count after a very competitive doubles round. The #2 doubles team of Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac pulled out an 8-6 victory over their opponents for the only doubles win. Abigail Shonk and Shea Donahue (8-5) fell narrowly in the #3 doubles slot while the #1 doubles team of Erin Doud and Ana Pico fell by an 8-4 count.
"It was one of our best team doubles efforts in terms of having a plan and playing with great energy across the board," said SVSU head coach Jenn Boehm. "We would have liked to put a little more pressure on them by winning at least two of them but the teams competed hard."
The Dragons claimed five of the six singles matches on the day, closing out the 7-2 victory. The lone victory for SVSU came at the #5 singles position, where Shonk posted a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory over her opponent. Mikayla Kazdan competed in an exhibition match for the Cards, posting an 8-6 win in her season debut.
"We knew this would be a great match for us to really dig our heels in and grind out points," stated Boehm. "We competed like warriors in the very hot, humid conditions. It really showed how much our conditioning and mental discipline have improved. Tiffin played well and has improved from last year. This performance shows us what we are capable of, giving ourselves a chance to win every match this season. We can't wait to get back on the court!"
Saginaw Valley (1-1, 1-1 GLIAC) continues play on the road at Grand Valley Saturday (Sep. 12) in a 2:00 p.m. match.
