BIG RAPIDS - The SVSU women's tennis team had another road contest on Sunday morning, as the Lady Cardinals traveled to face Ferris State University in a GLIAC matchup. The teams had a very closely-contested match that went down to the wire, with the Bulldogs narrowly pulling out a 5-4 victory over the Cards.
Ferris State was albe to claim two of the three matches in doubles. The lone victory for SVSU came at the #2 doubles position, where Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac teamed up for an 8-4 victory. The other two doubles contests were claimed in tiebreakers by Ferris, as the teams of Erin Doud and Ana Pico and Shea Donahue and Abigail Shonk lost 9-8 at #1 and #3 doubles, respectively.
Four of the singles matches went three sets and the teams split the matches 3-3. Ismailova posted a 3-6, 6-2, 5-4 (retired) win at #1 singles while Pico also posted a victory at #2 singles, winning 6-3, 4-6, 10-3. Donahue had the other singles win in the #3 singles spot, notching the victory with scores of 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Shonk lost a close match at #5 singles 0-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), as did Slonac in the #6 slot 4-6, 6-7.
Saginaw Valley (1-3, 1-3 GLIAC) returns to the courts on Saturday (Sep. 19), as the Cardinals host Lake Superior State University in a 10:00 a.m. contest at the SVSU Tennis Complex.
