BAY CITY, Mich. - SVSU senior women's tennis student-athlete Ana Pico Garcia has been selected as the GLIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after leading the Cardinals to a 2-0 record over the weekend in league action.
Garcia and her doubles partner Shea Donahue beat Ashland's No. 1 Doubles pair by a score of 8-3 on Saturday. She then moved up to the #1 Singles slot for Saginaw Valley and defeated Ashland's No. 1 Meghann Fitzpatrick in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. This gave Garcia her second win of the day. The two wins led the Lady Cardinals to an 8-1 rout of Ashland. Garcia and Donahue paired once again to beat Walsh's #1 Doubles, 9-7. She finished the contest in singles play with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Walsh's No. 2 Mercedes Fernandez. The Lady Cardinals went on to defeat Walsh 7-2 on Sunday.
Garcia is the first women's tennis student-athlete to earn the honor since Yunjiao Shangguan in the 2010 season.
SVSU is now 5-3 overall on the season and in GLIAC play. The Cards play on the road at Wayne State on Saturday (noon) and Hillsdale on Sunday (1 pm), looking to improve their position for seeding in the 2016 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament.
