School Records Fall on First Day of National Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Saginaw Valley State University track & field programs had several student-athletes perform well at the 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Taylor Stepanski finished first in the 800 Meter Run Prelims, shattering the school record with a time of 2:07.64.  It broke the old school record of 2:10.42, set by Alycia Wright at the 2012 Indoor Championships.

Stepanski joined teammates Kimberly Balls, Brittany Johnson and Chantelle Fondren to post a third place finish in the Distance Medley Relay with a mark of 11:31.53, breaking the previous record of 11:36.99, set at the 2015 GLIAC indoor championships.  It earns the relay team an All-American mark with the new record.

Johnson also competed in the Mile Run Prelims, finishing in 11th place with a time of 4:55.74.

Andrew Mudd sits in sixth place in the Men's Heptathlon.  He posted 2,902 points overall on the first day of competition.  He competed in the 60 Meter Dash (7.16, 826 pts.), Long Jump (6.57m, 713 pts.), Shot Put (11.68m, 587 pts.) and Long Jump (1.97m, 776 pts.).

Stepanski will compete in the 800 Meter Run finals at 5:00 pm and Anna Fochesato is set to take part in the High Jump at 5:15 pm.  Mudd will continue competition in the Heptathlon at 9:15 am with the 60 Meter Hurdles.  All times are Central Time.
