PAINESVILLE, Ohio - On the front-end of a weekend trip in Ohio, the SVSU Cardinal volleyball team posted a 3-0 sweep over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Lake Erie.
The Cardinals grabbed a 1-0 lead after claiming the first frame by a score of 25-22. Down to their last point in the second set (24-22), SVSU got four-consecutive points to close-out for a 26-24 victory, making the score 2-0. Saginaw Valley closed-out the match with a 25-21 win in the third and final set.
With the victory, SVSU improves to 8-6 overall in 2013 and 3-3 in the GLIAC. Lake Erie falls to 0-10 over all and 0-6 in league play.
Junior Kelsey Ferla (Lincoln Park, Mich./Gabriel Richard) led the offensive attack with a match-high 13 kills while adding eight digs on the defensive end. She earned Chili's "Player of the Match" for her efforts.
Freshman Andrea Brigham (Concord, Mich./Concord) had six kills while senior Lyndsay Reynolds (Saline, Mich./Saline) and junior Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich./Fraser) each had five kills and hit for percentages of .500 and .400, respectively. Frodle added a game-high three blocks for SVSU as well.
Redshirt freshman Kelly Vellucci (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) had 18 assists and senior Nicole Adam (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights) added 16 helpers
Saginaw Valley returns to action tomorrow (Oct. 5) at Ashland University. The Eagles enter the contest with an 11-3 overall record and 5-1 mark in legue play. The match is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
