Cardinals Fall in Second Game to Seton Hill

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Despite a solid pitching outing from freshmen Steve Janes (Chesterton, Ind.), the Saginaw Valley State baseball team has yet to break into the win column in the Russ Matt Tournament as they fell to Seton Hill University today (March 11) for the second time in two days, 10-2.

Janes only gave up two runs through the first six innings, but by the top of the seventh, he appeared to be tired after throwing close to 100 pitches in his debut. In the top of the seventh, Seton Hill was able to get two runners on before the third hitter drove a ball to left field bringing home the Griffins’ third run of the game. Janes hit the next batter to load the bases with nobody out, which prompted Head Coach Walt Head to bring junior Scott Haase (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) into the game to relieve Janes. Seton Hill was able to put up six runs in the inning, including a two-run home run, to take am 8-2 lead into the bottom half of the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, junior Chase Coulter (Clio, Mich.) belted a double down the left field line to give the Cardinals one on with nobody out. Junior Kevin Dore (Bay City, Mich) laid down a bunt to advance Coulter to third and beat the throw to first to put runners on the corner for junior Andy Ferriauolo (Perry, Mich.), who hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Coulter around to score. After Dore stole second base, junior Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich.) slapped a single to left field driving Dore home for the Cardinals’ final run of the game.

SVSU falls to 0-6 on the season as they prepare for a double-header starting at 11 a.m. tomorrow against Mankato (Minn.) State in Winter Haven, Fla.
