WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley
State baseball team couldn’t break into the win column this
afternoon (March 10) as the Cardinals fell to Seton Hill 9-8.
On the afternoon, the Cardinals out-hit the Griffins 14-12 with
the help of junior Ryan Webber (Clio, Mich.) hitting 3-for-4 with
two RBIs, junior Josh Peterson (Midland, Mich.) going 3-for-5,
including smacking a double to center field in the fourth inning
and freshman Jason Potts (Hartland, Mich.) going 3-for-5 with one
RBI, including a double down the right field line in the top of the
eighth inning that pulled the Cardinals within one as the game
headed into the bottom half of the eighth inning.
It was the defense’s turn to come up big to stop the
Griffin’s momentum and turn the game around. Freshman pitcher
Steve Pistono (Sterling Heights, Mich.) got the first batter out,
gave up a single to the next, came back to strike out the next
hitter, and then as a Griffin player attempted to steal second base
Webber threw a perfect strike to junior Chase Coulter (Clio, Mich.)
covering second base for the final out of the inning.
But, the Cardinals couldn’t get another run to cross the
plate in the top-half of the ninth, ending the game.
The Cardinals fall to 0-5 on the season as they head back into
action tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. looking for revenge against Seton Hill
in Russ Matt Tournament action.
