Cardinals Fall to Indianapolis, 79-75

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team dropped a 79-75 heartbreaker to the University of Indianapolis.

The Cardinals were led by senior guard Dante Williams (Romulus, Mich./East Tenn. St.) with 21 points. Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich./Nebraska-Kearney Univ.) added 12 points.

The Cardinals took a halftime lead of 41-38 on the strength of balanced scoring. Cardinals played ten different players in the half, with eight of them scoring. Chris Johnston (Clarkston, Mich.) and Williams led the Cardinals with ten and nine points respectively.

The Cardinals fell behind early in the second half, trailing by as many as six points at one point. The strong outside shooting of SVSU brought the Cardinals back. SVSU was 4-8 in the half from behind the arc. Williams led the way with 12 points in the half, while Stephenson dropped in eight points and grabbed five rebounds. The Cardinals had a chance to tie the game but a missed Greg Foster (Indianapolis, Ind. / T.C. Howe) game tying three pointer with three seconds left.

With the loss the Cardinals fall to 1-7 overall on the season, while Indianapolis moves to 4-6. SVSU will return to action on December 29, when they play host to Northern Kentucky, who is ranked in the top ten in Division II.
