Zirzow Named GLIAC North 'Player of the Week'

BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University sophomore forward Samantha Zirzow (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich HS) has been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Basketball North Division "Player of the Week."

Zirzow posted her fourth double-double of the season as the Cardinals extended their winning streak to three with a dominant victory over Northwood on Saturday, 74-51. Zirzow notched 14 points and 10 rebounds in the win over the Timberwolves on 4-of-5 shooting, including 6-for-6 from the foul stripe in 35 minutes of action.

Zirzow also led SVSU to victory over Lake Erie on Thursday by totaling a team-high 17 points and seven boards. For the week, Zirzow fired 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the field and combined for a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line.

Sam is currently fifth in the GLIAC in field goal percentage at 54 percent and is averaging 10.9 points (18th GLIAC) and 7.1 rebounds (11th GLIAC) per contest for Saginaw Valley.

The Cardinals now have seven GLIAC wins, which is the most since the 2006-2007 season and their current three-game win streak is their first since 2010. 

SVSU will be back in action on the road this Thursday (Feb. 7) when they battle Lake Superior State University for a 7:30 PM start.
