UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University football team held its annual Red/White Spring Game on Saturday (Apr. 14) with the White Team claiming a 24-0 victory over the Red.
Senior running back Ronnie Lark (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) put the first points of the game on the board with a 3-yard dive up the middle for the 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Lark's touchdown was set up by a 30-yard completion from Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South HS) to Nate Hoyle (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.).
Jennings would put the White up by a 14-0 advantage in the second quarter on a 5-yard pass to freshman wideout Dylan Monette (Williamston, Mich.). A Noah Sumpter (Lansing, Mich./Waverly HS) interception of Red quarterback Ben Merbler (Canton, Mich.) set up a 25-yard field goal for redshirt freshman Cody Ballard (DeWitt, Mich.), as the White Team took a 17-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, quarterback Keith Moore (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech HS), who was leading the Red offense, excited the fans in attendance with a 43-yard scramble, but would be unable to capitalize on the good field position as the Red Team failed to score.
Late in the fourth quartrer quarterback Branko Hamilton (Troy, Mich.) finished off the scoring with a 14-yard strike to tight end Mac Shaper (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central HS) to end the scoring at 24-0 with 1:47 left in the game.
The Cardinals will kickoff the 2012 football season on September 1 when they host DII power Valdosta State at 7:00 PM.
